From Haines, Chilkat river and Chilkoot lake offer many opportunities for waterborne activities. In September look for some of the over 3,500 bald eagles who migrate to this area. This yearly event is celebrated by the Haines Bald Eagle festival. Speeches and demonstrations by artisans and native dancers provide some of the entertainment. One of the highlights of the festival is capped off by a catered dinner and awards celebration inside the American Bald Eagle museum. Eagles and owls are on hand with their handlers to give demonstrations. American Bald Eagle museum in Haines has on display a unique diorama representing 48,000 acres of the Chilkat Bald Eagle preserve with over 200 specimens of the creatures living within it. Among quirky museum, Haines Hammer museum with its giant hammer outsided its doors stands out. There are hammer scupltures and over 1500 hammers on display ranging from Roman times to the present.
