Galena lies along the Yukon river. With no connecting roads outside the city, water and air are the only means of transportation to and from the city. However the airport, a former United States Air Force airfield, now welcomes heavy air traffic from Fairbanks; and Anchorage and during the Summer there is travel by boats and barges between neighboring communities and this city. Galena has a heated indoor Olympic-sized swimming pool and is home to a University of Alaska/Fairbanks Rural campus. The city is also home to the the Galena Interior Learning academy, a statewide boarding school for studentsa statewide boarding school for students taking accredited grades 9 through 12 and post secondary adult vocational programs. Here students study for careers in aviation, automotive technology, cosmetology, health sciences and the culinary arts.
