Wichita is sometimes referred to as the Air Capital of the World because of the number of aircraft companies located here. Manufacturing more than half of the world’s general aviation light aircraft and business jets and major suppliers to the builders of commercial airliners are such companies as Cessna Aircraft, Spirit Aerosystems, Hawker Beechcraft, Boeing Integrated Defense Systems and Bombardier Learjet which together employ close to 36,000 workers. The city provides plenty of sites for the recreational needs of its citizens with 9 recreation centers, 11 swimming pools, 52 athletic fields, 5 golf courses and the Wichita Ice Center equipped with Olympic and NHL Rinks.
