Skowhegan was first settled in the last part of the 18th century. It has since become the home of several modern businesses including the New Balance Shoe company. Those of you remember Senator Margaret Chase Smith, the first woman U.S. Senator will be interested to know that this city was her home. Skowhegan has dedicated the Margaret Chase Smith Library to her wherein are housed the Senator’s memorabilia. Her life and career are commemorated in the museum housed in this facility and by its educational center. Celebrate the Kennebec River with residents at this city’s Riverfest in late June. A full weekend of fun for the family with free raft trips down the river, food vendors, musical entertainment and an expo of recreation-focused businesses and organizations.
