The area around Wabasha was first settled by a descendent of the Sioux Nation, the original dwellers in the Mississippi river valley. It is the oldest city in Minnesota and was named after a chief of the Sioux Nation. There are many old buildings here and one of them ; St. Felix Catholic Church was built on land donated by the original settler of the town. The rare American Bald eagle can be found in the Wabasha area nesting in the thousands of acres of wildlife area known as the Nelson Bottoms. There is an Eagle Watch deck located on the riverfront at the end of Pembroke Avenue and an Eagle Watch Observatory is in the planning stages. For those who wish to catch a glimpse of nostalgic sights there are the dockings of the Delta Queen and other steamboats. Wabasha is a popular port of call for steamboats.
