Breckenridge lies right along the border with North Dakota. Welles park, a park on the Easter border of the city, lies right along the border with North Dakota as well. Breckenridge, once inhabited by the Dakota (Sioux) and Ojibwa (Chippewa) Indian nations, was opened up for settlement by Indian treaties in the middle of the 19th century. Headwaters Day held in September opens with a sumptuous Pancake breakfast followed by a parade. Starting at a barbeque lunch, Musical entertainment is provided throughout the day. If boating enthusiasts want to trailer their boats to the city; a treat awaits them. Where the Bois De Sioux and Otter Tail Rivers meet to form the Red River of the North in Headwaters Park; there is a boat landing, dock, parking and picnic shelter facilities.
