Early settlement in the area was centered around a town called Whitefield. Between 1883-1885, when the Illinois Central Railroad obtained the rights to operate near Whitefield the new location was named Sturgis. New businesses which were opened located near the depot in Sturgis. The town has an annual reunion, organized by some of the descendants of the early settlers of the county.
