This city does not forget its past. The columns from the University of Missouri’s original administration building that burned down around 1892 are still standing on Eighth Street. The pillars of the original courthouse built around 1846 which were aligned with the columns at Missouri University are also still standing on Eighth Street. The Francis Quadrangle includes 7 buildings which are on the on the National Register of Historic Places, including the residence for university presidents and chancellors since about 1867 and six Ionic columns from Academic Hall, destroyed in that same fire around 1892. The Maplewood Home circa 1877 and fully restored,is representative of 19th-century country estate living and is the home of the Maplewood Barn Community Theatre.
