As early as 1840, settlers were buying land from the government in this area. Due to the presence of Hooper Institute and Clarksburg college this town was known for its superior schools. The The Hooper Institute was established around 1876 with ten pupils. During the succeeding years it graduated teachers, farmers, merchants, physicians and bankers. Hooper Institute was gradually integrated with Clarksburg College. Clarksburg College was established around 1877 as Clarksburg Academy. The college, after purchase by the Baptist Association became known as Clarksburg Baptist College and continued to operate until around 1912. Each June Clarksburg residents hold their annual Hooper Days in honor of the founder of Hooper Institute who dreamt of making Clarksburg the Athens of Moniteau County.
