Two of Shelbyville’s parks, Kessler and Lake offer picnic shelters and plenty of room to roam around. Lake park lies along Shelbyville lake. The third park, Forest Park, was originally the county fairgrounds when it was established around 1857. Located in this park are the Chautauqua Auditorium, Vietnam Memorial, Family Aquatic center, Boy Scout cabin, Lions Club building, Shelby County Senior center, picnic areas, pavilions, the sunken gardens, baseball and softball diamonds, soccer fields, fishing lagoon and Youth Athletic Center. The aquatic center has a zero depth entry pool with a a frog slide, a water slide and a one-meter drop slide. There is also another pool with lap lanes. Chautauqua Auditorium, built around 1903 has an interior floor space of approximately 15,000 square feet with no posts inside the structure. A unique series of beams and supports in the ceiling supports the roof and the building, on the National Register of Historic Places, is the largest building of its kind anywhere in the world. Although no longer the entertainment center of the community, it once played host to the John Phillips Sousa Band, vibrant musicians and performers and famous speakers. The Memorial Sunken Garden was once the site of the old swimming hole.
