If you were here in the 1830’s you were probably among a handful of Virginians who came to the area. In the 1850’s a land transaction was completed for a new town named Millville and the town was laid out which included a one-hundred foot right-of-way for railroad tracks laid down for the Wabash, St.Louis & Pacific Railroad and lots on both sides of the track. There were already many farms, ranches and tobacco plantations surrounding Millville. A Post office was established under the name “Snowhill”. Another settler to the area during this time was an immigrant from Ireland who became a large land owner, stock raiser, leading citizen and tobacco grower. In the middle of the 1870’s the name of the town and the Post Office were changed to honor him.
