First came the French explorers, settling in the area in the late 1600’s, then the Spanish settlers in the late 1700’s. Just before the end of the 18th century, a group of settlers from Virginia, Kentucky and the Deep South came by wagon train. In the fall of 1949, Hazelwood was incorporated as a village becoming a city some 20 years later. The city Sports complex has several ball fields, room for soccer fields, a pavilion and concession building. Two other facilities are available to residents. The Community Center is equipped with a gymnasium, game room, weight room and meeting rooms. The Civic Center East has a gymnasium, suspended walking and jogging track, fitness center, multi-purpose rooms and a parking garage. The city operates an outdoor Skate/BMX Park which is illuminated and has ramps, a half pipe, and a variety of skate/BMX obstacles. The city sponsors a free “Summer Concert Series” at Truman Park, held one Saturday a month from May to September.
