Glendive was founded around 1881 with the coming of the Northern Pacific railroad and named for a nearby creek. Its economy originally depended on the new farming and cattle industry, however oil, gas, and coal was discovered in the area and an electric power and gas industry sprung up with the city becoming a supply center for the Williston Basin oil fields. The city is home to the Dawson Community college. Seven buildings make up the the Frontier Gateway museum in Glendive. There is the main building the basement of which houses a recreation of a street of Glendive with replicas of the actual stores that could have been found here from 1881 to the mid-1900’s; a blacksmith shop, two country stores, a buggy shed, fire hall, log cabin, a restored country school and a large display of farm machinery. The city has another museum that the kids will really love. The Makoshika Dinosaur museum has exhibits representative of three dinosaur time periods; Triassic, Jurassic and Cretaceous. It has a vast collection of dinosaur sculptures, fossil replicas and real fossils on display.
