An oil boom in the 1930’s fueled the city’s economy and this continued into the 1940’s. In the 1960’s the area experienced another oil boom. Even today there are a large number of small oil and gas wells around Cut Bank. However the economy here does does not depend only on oil and gas; instead Wheat is a primary crop with harvests from mid-July through September. Each year Cut Bank holds a Lewis and Clark festival in late July to honor the time when the expedition passed through this area. Included in the festivities are a parade, free concerts, a chili cook-off and a craft fair. Cut Bank municipal airport is located a few miles to the Southwest of the city. Although it does not have any commercial flights; it is a stop for general aviation, executive jets, military, homeland security and air ambulance flights. B17 crews trained here during World War II when it was an airbase and it is now the home of the WWII Airmen’s Memorial museum.
