When the the Burlington railroad built a station just across from the existing town of Collinsville the residents moved to the site and changed the name of the town to Benkelman. Benkelman was selected as the county seat around 1884, two years after the arrival of the railroad. The Dundy County museum features theme rooms filled with collections representative of the history of the county. The operational soda fountain is a favorite spot of the youngsters. The city has two venues for outdoor the recreation; the city park with features such as a swimming pool, basketball court, tennis court, skate park, jungle gym, RV hookups and shaded picnic areas and the municipal baseball field. Two annual events held here during the year should catch your attention. The Fall festival and Car show held in mid September has in addition to the classic cars, trucks, tractors and motorcycles lined up on Main Street, a fun run, tractor pull, biker games, beer garden, city wide garage sales and a dance. The Dundy County Fair, held in July, is the place where people exhibit their livestock, garden vegetables and fruits, home made creations.
