Washington county has 6 major towns; Arlington, Blair, Fort Calhoun, Herman, Kennard and
Washington. There are two national protected areas in the county and one state historical park, Fort Atkinson. Blair sits along the Missouri river. You can find nature trails, fishing areas and restored prairie in DeSoto National Wildlife refuge a few miles East of Blair. Best thing in this area is the sight of migrating waterfowl including up to over snow geese and close to 50,000 ducks during the fall migration. Bald eagles, hundreds of wild turkeys and white-tailed deer also populate the area. Take a trip down US 75 to Fort Calhoun to see artifacts from prehistoric time, Native American dress and equipment, early farm tools and equipment, school and household items, fine china brought to the county from Europe,Thomas Edison items and early telephone equipment in the Washington County Historical museum.
