This county benefits economically from the farming industry and productive oil fields in the area. Remarkably Chaves is one of the largest milk producing counties in the nation. The county is also home to the country’s first oil field training center. In 1947 the “Roswell incident” changed things around here. Allegedly the remains of a crashed flying saucer were recovered near Roswell. This started a whole new industry based on tourism and the annual festival commemorating the event which was supposed to have happened here. Piñatafest is a joyful festival held over a three day period in Roswell. Lovers of mexican food must come here to enjoy the salsa making and jalapeno eating contests and biscochitos added to the music, dance and lasso contests.
