Some of the original counties in New Mexico must have had lots of land to give away. De Baca county was formed from parts of Guadalupe, Chaves, and Roosevelt counties around 1917. This county has its share of ghost towns; fourteen to be exact, some more interesting than others. You can catch a glimpse into the Navajo and Mescalero Apache cultures and their imprisonment at Bosque Redondo when you visit the memorial at Fort Sumner State monument. Old Fort Days held in June features Goat Roping, Friday Night Street dance with live band, the Cow Plop, a sanctioned rodeo, cowboy dance, a Vintage Car show,
cowboy breakfast and Native American dancers.
