This small community is the county seat located along Route 84. It is known as a sleepy village with a shady past. It is the final resting place of Billy the Kid shot and killed here in 1881. The Billy the Kid museum has on display his rifle, chaps and spurs, the original Wanted poster and even locks of his hair. That’s not all there is to see at this museum; there’s also as many as 150 firearms from different periods, and antique automobiles ranging from 1941 fire trucks, Model T’s and Model A’s to 1956 classic cars. Sumner Lake State Park offers fishing, hiking, water sports and facilities for hooking up your camper.
