Whitney Point, New York 13862
The Capitol Building in Washington, DC owes this area thanks, as much of the lumber used in the 1816 building came from here. Located on Lower Collins St in Whitney Point is an antique store, formerly a home that was a stop on the “Underground Railroad”. The first Broome County Fair opened here in 1874. The Whitney Automobile, manufactured here from 1902-1903, sold for $850 (top & fenders, $70 extra). President Roosevelt toured the area after the 1935 flood, and authorized the building of a flood dam, creating Whitney Point Lake, a 1000 acre reservoir from the Otselic River, designed for upland wildlife management, and 20 acres of wetland & fish habitat structures. And for people, there’s picnic areas, camping, a beach for swimming, fishing and easy access launch for small craft. And since 1974, Dorchester Park has hosted the (Almost) Annual Crappie Derby. Formed from the “Old State of Lisle” in 1831, the Town of Triangle includes the villages of Whitney Point, Upper Lisle, & Triangle. Four state highways – rtes 11, 26, 79 & 206 – all intersect at Main St in Whitney Point.
