About the area
Freeport is a village originally settled in 1650 on the south shore of LI in the Town of Hempstead that has thrived on its location and the bounty of the sea. Considered to be a suburb of NYC, it is a deep sea fishing and oystering center. Freeport’s Nautical Mile, a strip along the shore showcases many seafood restaurants and shanties, fresh fish markets, boutiques, bars and boats including party cruises and casino ships that float atop the canals that line Freeport. Band Leader Guy Lombardo resided in Freeport and housed his many speedboats there.
