Queen Catharine Montour, last chief of the local Senecas, called Schuyler County home, as did Brigham Young, the Mormon leader; Cameron Argentsinger laid out the first course near the village of Watkins Glen (listed on the National Register of Historic Places); later, a permanent course was built, & the 1st NASCAR Grand National Stock Car Event was held in 1957 (won by Buck Baker); racing of all kinds continues. The 1930 (or 1932) Bermuda Race champion, the schooner Malabar X, continues to sail Seneca Lake, which claims to have its own sea serpent(?); Rainbow trout spawn in Catharine Creek; the Catharine Valley Trail, 6 Nations Trail System, & Finger Lakes National Forest offer camping, hiking & other outdoor activities; Finger Lakes Wine Festival & Montour Falls Harvest Festival run annually; Many wineries are part of the Seneca Lake Wine Trail (tourist packages – including overnight accommodations – available).
