Incorporated in 1873, the Village of Canisteo is located on the site of the Indian village Kanestio Castle, destroyed by Sir William Johnson in 1765. Canisteo Village is located at the junction of NYS Rtes 36 & 248. “The Living Sign” spells out “Canisteo” in Scotch Pines. Appeared in Ripley’s Believe It or Not, and listed in the Registry of Historic Places; The Armed Services use it to orient true north when flying overhead.
