Fifteen year after the Great Northern railroad spur from Minot was extended into eastern Williams County during the summer of 1887; homesteaders from Tioga County, New York, settled here and founded Tioga. The next few years saw a blacksmith’s shop, meat market, pool hall, hardware store, harness shop, hotel, tailor shop, tavern, drug store, printing shop and livery barns added to the town. A fire in 1907 destroyed a majority of the businesses but in a few year they were up and operating again. The Amerada Petroleum corporation discovered oil on the Clarence Iverson farm in the Spring of 1951, resulting in an oil boom with oil men, speculators, brokers and laborers flooding into Tioga. Oil production peaked around 1966 and Tioga benefited with the construction of modern schools, paved streets, a hospital and nursing home, park, swimming pool and airport and the addition of modern fire fighting and rescue equipment. Summer enjoyment and cooling off is possible at the Tioga Community pool.
