Known as Lawnville around 1827, it later received its charter as Aracoma, named for the daughter of a Shawnee chief, from the Virginia legislature. Shortly after the beginning of the 20th century the name was changed to Logan, named for the Chief of the Cayuga Tribe. The Museum in the Park at Chief Logan State park in representation of frontier days presents live demonstrations of crafts, pastimes and occupations of frontier settlers from the 1760’s through the early 1800’s. It also displays exhibits showing items depicting the story of the coal mining industry in West Virginia, practicing medicine in the early days and the Buffalo Creek Disaster, the flood which killed 125 people, injured 1,100 and left 4,000 homeless. The museum from time to time also displays exhibits on loan from other museums.
