About the area
The name comes from the fact that the city is located between the Fox and Wisconsin Rivers. Those traviling the waterways had to “portage” their equipment from one stream to the other through this area. Marquette and Joliet were here in 1673. US 39 and 51 as well as State 33 traverse the community. The city of about 10,000 has an airport, Amtrak station,and a Center for the Arts.
